Colorful Buildings are Good For the Soul-Day 82-April 1st, 2018

We got up around 8:30 to make sure we had enough time to get to mass. We had decided to go to Easter mass on our island of Lido instead of main-land Venice since it would be a huge pain and super crowded there. We found a local church on the island that was about ten minutes away.

Nick was kind enough to cook us breakfast again this morning. The eggs and sausage were as good as the day before. I cleaned the dishes to do my fair share.

We all donned our Sunday’s best and headed to the church. We were a little unsure of what time it was at, but assumed it would be at least 10:30. We got to the church around 9:40, and I asked someone in Italian what the mass was. Our initial guess was right and it was at 10:30. No one was there yet, so we went for a brief walk.

Nick and I took this nice picture then

We headed back to the church and grabbed some seats. Soon the church was packed. They’re were these nice old American ladies in front of us who we talked to a bit. We were also given packets that had all the response and readings in Italian for the mass.

The mass was pretty typical for Easter. With the packet, I was able to read along and listen to the priest speak Italian. Since they spoke slowly, I was surprisingly able to understand pretty much all of what they were saying. I guess my Italian is better than I thought. The priest must have been visiting because I could tell Italian wasn’t his first language. The mass was really normal until one point where the priest broke off into an English song and encouraged us to clap.

It was fun, but dragged on for way too long. After about ten minutes, the whole church was really confused and he wrapped up. The rest of mass was normal, but the weird song was definitely a bit odd. Nick and I quietly explained to Harry that this wasn’t super normal. Mass eventually ended, and we left to take advantage of the beautiful day.

We briefly stopped back in our Airbnb, and grabbed our bags for the day. We headed back to the boat stop and headed off to our first island destination of the day, Burano.

We knew two things about Burano:

1. It was the island of the fishermen.

2. It had really colorful houses.

We were really excited about point number two. It was about a forty minute ride and we soon arrived in Burano.

Burano was absolutely incredible. Every building was painted a bright color and made for fantastic scenery. Despite being Easter Sunday, the island was pretty crowded. We headed off into alleyways to find some pretty canal we saw from the boat.

I could explain the island, but a pictures worth a thousand words.

Enjoy these pictures:

The colors were amazing and it was hard not to take pictures of everything. We got hungry after a bit and stopped in a restaurant for lunch. All three of us were in the mood for pizza. I don’t know about you, but Italy seems like a pretty good place for pizza.

I ended up getting personal pizza with prosciutto. As expected, it was delicious.

My pizza

After lunch, we wanted to complete the meal with some gelato. We found some place nearby and I got some some tasty fruit flavored one.

The Gelato

We went to the famous church on the island next. It’s sort of difficult to see from my photos, but the church tower is really crooked. I’m talking about Leaning Tower of Pisa level of crooked.

The church

After seeing the church, we felt pretty satisfied about the island and were ready to leave. We went to the boat station and headed to the next island, Troncello.

Troncello is known as the abandoned island and is pretty barren. All it really had is the boat station and this one church. Either way, the island was cool and nice change of scenery.

Here’s a picture or two

After exploring the island for about an hour, we headed to another island. We were returning to Murano, the island known for glass-making. Since it was raining yesterday, we didn’t feel like we didn’t do the island justice.

I’m not going to write much for Murano, since it was similar to yesterday. We really wanted to see a glass blowing demonstration, but since it was a Sunday and a holiday, none were open. We got to see some more cool glass shops with fancy art pieces.

Here’s a cool chandelier I saw

On the way back to the bus station, we made a game of counting how many glass shops we saw just on in side of the canal. We counted 36 in our ten minute walk. This should give you an idea of what Murano is like.

We then had a almost hour long journey back to Lido. The boat was super crowded and we had to switch to another one after a while to get back to Lido. A while later, we were finally back.

We are the leftover chicken and potatoes for dinner that we had from the Passover meal. They were as good as the night before.

The rest of our night was pretty simple. We drank some wine and beer and watched the rest of Inception. I had a fun time just hanging out with Harry and Nick. We ended up going to bed around 12, ready for our last day in Venice.
